Diploma to Degree Open Day

IDP Singapore has organised a Diploma to Degree Open Day for Australian Universities whereby either Final Year students from Polytechnics or students sitting for their GCE O and A levels can attend to seek advices or even apply for a place in any of the Universities. There were also seminars held for certain courses such as biomedical science and several others related to health sciences today. As it is a two-day event, there will seminars focused on other topics tomorrow.

Held at the Orchard Hotel ballroom, LY and I attended the Open Day today due to our considerations of attending a University in Australia in the future. Not knowing what to expect, we went in and it took us sometime to take in the fact that the ballroom was open for serious applicants. There were many booths outlining the perimeter of the ballroom, each belonging to a particular University of Aus. As we walked through some of them, we overheard and saw that representatives of each Uni were really analysing the result slips of people who had actually bought them there.

We didn't want to apply, we just wanted to know more about the courses we're interested in and to get more information about certain Universities. After a moment of delay, we decided to approach the first University which was University of South Australia [can't be too sure about the name since I can't really remember] as the course LY is interested in is offered by that U. So she just asked several questions regarding the course and whatnot.

LY reading through one of the Uni's course guide.

After warming ourselves up, we decided to go for it and approach the Universities we were interested in, particularly the Universities which are part of the Group of Eight. Well, actually the only Universities offering the course I'm interested in are all part of the Group of Eight - ANU, Uni of New South Wales, Uni of Queensland and Monash Uni. FYI, I'm interested in majoring in Korean [be it language or studies]. And two particular Universities left a rather good impression on me namely, ANU and Uni of Queensland. Both Universities had very nice and friendly representatives -unlike UNSW [eeehhh].

The ANU rep whom I talked to was kind of enthusiastic when I talked to him about my interest of Asian Studies because he himself graduated with a degree in Asian studies, majoring in Indonesian. I told him that I was interested in Korean and he told me a lot of things that other Uni didn't mention. So in ANU, for the degree in Asian studies there are two majors for students to take up - one language and one non-language. He said that I could major in Korean Language and the other major could be Korean studies. -I was super psyched in my heart when I heard this because if I'm not wrong, the other Unis only allow Korean studies as a minor- Then he continued and said that Korean studies offer the History, Politics, Culture and even "Man Hwa". I seriously didn't get what he said when he first said "man hwa" because he said it very soft and I didn't think that it will be part of the degree program, so I was like "huh? come again?" he then explained it to be Korean comic.

Wah. Man hwa also got leh!

But really, ANU is the only U in Aus with such comprehensive and detailed undergraduate program in Asian studies because it's the only U with a College of Asia and the Pacific [it's just like SP having School of CLS, Business, EEE, etc]. And the degree will be in Asian Studies (Korean) whereas for the other Unis, it's Degree in Arts (Korean). Which one sounds more professional, more convincing? They also offer "Specialist" degree whereby students get to go the Country of the language that they're majoring at to study for a year!!! *zi-high* But that's only for the top students... *zi-high withers away*

AND this Uni is the TOP Uni in Aus, part of the top 20 Unis in the world.

Gaaah. But if I'm going to apply for a U in Aus, I will definitely count ANU in [and not forgetting, Uni of Queensland, Monash U and maybe UNSW]. Right now, I'm still considering where to further my studies... So Aus is not a confirmed place but the Unis are confirmed IF I want to go to Aus.

Our course guide books taken from the booths. LOL. Both mine and LY's combined.

After we were done with our business in the Open Day, we braved the rain and wind for the sake of Korean Cuisine @ Su's. Yes, there again. Their food are just toooo yumilicious. Oh and this meal was a treat by dear LY... hehe. Because I did her FYP group a huge favour. [Come to think of it, her whole group should treat me.] HAHA.

Here's what came in the mail on Thursday:

From the bottom: DBSK- Artiste of the Month photos, Big Bang- 3rd Mini Album, DBSK- 14th Single, Brown Eyes- 3rd Album.

I wanted to buy DBSK's single and BB's MA only, but I didn't meet the minimum requirement for shipping! I don't want to pay for stupid shipping fees! So I grabbed Brown Eyes because I was confident of liking the album though I've never heard a song from this album before [plus, they disbanded in 2003 and reuniting again after 5 years! wow.] But I still can't reach the minimum so i went to search for the cheapest thing that is relevant to me... and decided on the DBSK photos. LOL.

Oh and if you're wondering why I bought Big Bang's Mini Album, it's because all the songs are veeeery nice.... Then I found out that the producer of this album is one of the BB members, recording producer another BB member. 5 songs written by producer, 1 song written by recording producer. Composing and arranging also involve the BB members. So basically almost everything is done by BB. Well, I've heard of them composing their own songs but I didn't know it will be ALL the songs and I didn't know THEY themselves are the producers. WTH?! Don't be so talented can or not?!
